But why study Noh? For one reason, the aesthetics of Noh are beautiful, and for another, Noh can enlighten us to some of the characteristics of Japanese culture. Like all theatre, Noh has the ability to educate us about life. Enshrined in tradition, Noh also offers a window to other Japanese forms of art.
In ancient times, artists performed Noh before the gods in order to ask them to cure illness according to Hall and Toyoda (1977:306)
